This is the Eschmeyer's Scorpionfish, Scorpaenopsis eschmeyeri. This record in northern NSW (c. 30 S) is a range extension from southern Qld (previously known southwards to Moreton Bay, c. 27 25 S). The identification was confirmed by the world expert in this genus, Hiroyuki Motomura (Kagoshima University Museum, Japan).
