About this species
Three phases are evident in their characteristics. Juveniles are dull in colouring, usually a light brown, with faint horizontal lines along the body. With age, these lines form thick vertical bars. During the initial phase (female) they are a light yellowish orange with five vertical blue bars, which is created by scales with a blue edging. The underside is lighter and the tail has blue edging. During the terminal phase, which is the transition from female to male, the colouring brightens to a greenish blue. Scales have a pinkish edging and fins are bluish green with pink stripped sections.
