The identity as D. excisus is based on the currently accepted name for this in Australian databases. This specimen, which is an eastern Australian variation with a 'C' shaped marking on the tail, is considered as a separate, undescribed species (Doryrhamphus sp. 1) in "Seahorses and their Relatives" by Rudie Kuiter (an authority on this group).
