The Tasmanian marine environment
The ocean plays an important role in the lives of all Tasmanians. Our island is surrounded by sea and two thirds of us live in costal regions. Nowhere in Tasmania is more than 115 kilometres from the sea, so even if you are not a diver, swimmer or fisher you benefit from a clean healthy ocean as much as from clean healthy air.
Tasmanian marine habitats
The Tasmanian marine environment is recognised for the global significance of its marine biodiversity, with 60% of marine species endemic (unique) to the state. Read more about the habitats and ecosystems of the Tasmanian marine environment. Learn more >>
Major currents that influence Tasmania
Tasmania has three major currents systems which influence its coastal waters. The Eastern Australian Current (EAC) delivers warm waters to the east coast of Tasmania from Queensland, the Leeuwin and Zeehan Currents, beginning about the mid Western Australian coast, and a third current system, the Global Conveyor Belt, which originates in the southern ocean as the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.
