* FISHING EXPOSED! What fish, and how many, do Tasmanians catch each year?

According to the IMAS study 2007-08 Survey of recreational fishing in Tasmania, some 120,000 Tasmanians 'fish for fun' each year. In 2007, Dr Lyle from the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies and his team contacted almost 3500 Tasmanian households to determine whether they contained any recreational fishers - and of those that did, more than 1000 kept fishing diaries to record their fishing habits over 12 months. The study revealed that Tasmanian recreational fishers caught 1.62 million finfish during 2007-08. Approximately 292 tonnes of flathead were hooked each year, an amount four times greater than the commercial catch of flathead in Tassie inland waters. Other catches of significance were 145 tonnes of tuna, 48 tonnes of salmon, 45 tonnes of calamari, 37 tonnes of Gould’s squid and 19 tonnes of trumpeters. * Redmap on the ABC's 7.30 Report!

Redmap featured on the ABC's 7.30 Report Rare Finds - "a wave of new fish in Tasmanian waters" (9 March 2012). The five-minute feature very nicely summed up how Tasmanian divers, fishers and scientists are seeing more and more fish that are usually found in warmer waters. And many Tasmanians are enthusiastically logging onto the Redmap website to share these uncommon sightings. Dive photographer Adriaan G Van Huissteden kindly took the 7.30 crew on a dive boat and provided the ABC with some awesome underwater footage. Thanks also to Dr Rick Stuart-Smith for his stunning still images, also used in the report. And of course, the tv feature also mentioned that Redmap is expanding - Redmap Australia will be launched by the end of the year! Watch the 7.30 Report video on Redmap here.
