Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute
The Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute (TAFI) is a marine research centre that supports the development and sustainable management of living marine resources.
TAFI is a joint venture between the Tasmanian Government and the University of Tasmania. Established in 1998, it combined the complementary resources and facilities of both institutions into a single entity.
Tasmanian Community Fund
The Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute (TAFI) obtained a grant from the Tasmanian Community Fund to develop this community-based ecological monitoring program. The Tasmanian Community Fund has provided grants to a broad range of not-for-profit organisations since 2000. The Fund was established from the sale proceeds of a community asset, the Trust Bank, to provide funds back to the community. The Fund has established itself as a significant part of the community landscape over the past eight years, with millions in grants allocated to 977 projects.

Peter very kindly let us use a lot of his beautiful images throughout the site. He is also the brains behind much of the database and mapping functions of Redmap - check out his profile on our scientists page.
I have lived in Tasmania for the past 20 years and have been free diving and scuba diving for the past 10 years. I have done a lot of land based photography, and in 2006, turned to underwater photography. I have a free gallery where images of underwater scenery and sea life can be viewed at www.vizbiz.com.au. I try to dive all around Australia, including diving with the endangered Grey Nurse Sharks in NSW and Giant groupers in QLD. In my underwater photography, I try to capture what some people will never see. It can be challenging at times, but it is always very rewarding. I have undertaken many different under water surveys, and also done species counts of the rare and endangered Handfish. I have also developed tools to aid in these surveys, such as an underwater GPS unit, for location and marking areas and species of interest. I think Redmap is a truly amazing idea, and we, the people diving, fishing, boating or just walking along the waters of Tasmania, need to use this tool as much as possible to help make it work.
